Any communication involving two parties requires two source and destination addresses. Within the entire protocol stack, only four pairs of addresses are necessary, as the physical layer does not require them. Here are the types of addresses:
- Names: Examples of addresses at the application layer include URLs or email addresses.
- Port numbers: These indicate the source and destination programs at the application layer.
- Logical addresses: These uniquely identify a device’s connection to the Internet.
- Link layer addresses: These identify a specific network interface on a host or router. They are sometimes called MAC addresses.
